Beanie & Bear SS16 is brighter & bolder

Just looking at the awesome new SS16 Beanie & Bear swimwear makes me want to jump on a plane, head to the beach and then jump into Turquoise water with my mini pirates.

I’ve raved before about the bright, bold and beautiful beach pieces so often and now I have the chance to do it again as I have just spied the new editions. Here are my top picks:

  1. Abby Bum

  • Paloma suit

Charlie & the pirates SS16What I love the most is the bright colours and the fact that the shorts and Tee are perfect for both boys and girls. The new collection has a more detailed print, which is exciting but you can still mix and match all of the pieces (much easier for when you are packing to go away).

Don’t forgot the inaugural Beanie & Bear collection is also on sale, you don’t want to miss out. My favourites will always be the Yasmin Bum and the Grey T’s.

I caught up with the super-talented Noya Bebawi, who created Beanie & Bear. She is one busy lady because not only has she launched this fab London based brand, she is also mum to ‘Beanie’ and ‘Bear’, a graphic designer and children’s illustrator. Here is what she had to say:

  • What’s the inspiration behind the new collection?

We’ve stayed faithful to the winning formula of bright colours, playful prints and neon trim on classic shapes a modern twist.

This season we’ve gone tropical with the print design that anchors the collection featuring toucans, butterflies, big jungle leaves and gorgeous flowers. We’ve also introduced a wave print that takes its inspiration from classic Japanese illustrations. In terms of colour we’re drawing on the heat and sunshine with holiday palette of blues, oranges, yellows, pinks and lush lush greens.

  • What are your favourite pieces?

That isn’t an easy question to answer but if pushed I would pick 3 particular highlights from this collection.

First would have to be the Yasmin Bum – you’ve gotta love that ruffle! This season it comes in fabulous new turquoise stripe with neon orange trim.

Second is the Milo Bum boxer. It looks super cool both in and out of the pool. It’s always been a unisex design but this seasons ‘Sunshine’ colour way in bright yellow with vibrant pink trim is Beanie’s go to short.Charlie & the pirates Beanie & Bear SS16

Last but not least is the new Paloma Swimsuit. I have had a lot of requests for a one-piece and I’m really delighted with how the Paloma came together. It’s proving to be a hit already!!

  • What has surprised you the most about launching a kids’ swimwear brand?

I guess it’s that one size does not fit all! Kids vary so much in shape and in what appeals to them aesthetically – just like adults do! Until we really started looking at how we could get the fit of each piece as close to perfect as possible, I’d not really thought about how different children can be to each other. That’ one of the reasons that we went down the “Mix and Match” route. I know that Beanie is smaller on the bottom than the top, so she needs different sizes. It also allows us to offer endless colour combinations. We now celebrate the fact that no two kids are the same.

  • What have been your biggest learnings?

That there’s an amazing community of people out there that have really helped me find my feet – I just needed to get out there to find them. And that getting things right takes twice as long and costs twice as much as I thought it would!! Recognising that so many things are out of my control has not been easy but I am trying to ‘go with the flow’ a bit more. It’s a work in progress!

  • Who is your style inspiration?

One of the reasons I started Beanie and Bear was precisely because I was struggling to find inspirational children’s swimwear. The range has its roots somewhere in the 80s when I was a kid myself.

As an adult, I love the style that’s epitomised by Audrey Lombard. When it comes to effortless chic and laid back cool I think the French have got it nailed and that’s reflected in a lot of their brands.

  • Where is your favourite place to go so Beanie and Bear can wear their own beach kit?

We’ve been visiting Ibiza regularly since before Beanie & Bear were born. We tend to stick to the quieter parts of the island these days and one of the things we love about it is that despite feeling like home from home we find something great and new every time we visit.

Our SS15 look book was shot in Ibiza but for SS16 we ventured further afield and visited the Maldives at the end of last year. It blew my mind. It’s got to be the closest place to heaven on earth!

  • What are your holiday essentials?

Swimmers (obvs!), sunnies, cut-off denims, flip flops and a good book!

  • Where would you most like to see Beanie & Bear being worn?

On a smiling kid that’s having fun.

  • What next for Beanie & Bear?

It’s a really exciting time for us right now! We’ve just launched SS16 but we’re already working on a new range of designs for next season.   We’ve also established some great relationships over the past few months which have given us the opportunity to work with great people who are doing fantastic things. We’re very proud that we will be stocked by the Mini Edit (the-mini-edit.com), Shortstitch (shortstitch.com) and all the way down under by Feisty Little Mouse (instagram.com/feistylittlemouse)

Thank you Noya and bring on Summer 2016….
